According to a new study published Monday in Nature Astronomy, scientists may have discovered signs of life on Venus.

Researchers found evidence of phosphine, a gas produced by microbes on Earth and a marker of possible life, using two telescopes, according to Axios. They're not certain the gas is evidence of life of some kind, but they believe some kind of life is the most plausible explanation for the gas.

Clara Sousa-Silva, who helped author the new study, told Axios of the possible sign of life, "So far we've done everything we can, which is go through all the things that it isn't. We've thought of every possible mechanism, plausible or implausible, that could make phosphine and we cannot come up with any."

Jonathan McDowell, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics who wasn't affiliated with the study, expressed skepticism that life could explain the gas.
